On Raw, John Cena is the most enjoyable thing that is happening right now, I say this not because of the element of surprise that the ‘US Title Open Challenge’ brings to the program – although I am a sucker for it – but I say it because being the “Top Guy” in the company, John Cena has done a fantastic job as of late at bringing credibility back to not just the US title, but the entire mid-card - It feels fun again!
A week prior to the ‘Kevin Owens Incident’ we’ll call it, John Cena wrestled Neville in what many have considered to be a good match, even having Neville kick out of the “AA” shown us, the viewers, how big a heart this young Brit has! -- Which really compliments his onscreen persona.
Previous to that, Cena wrestled Sami Zayn, again in another quite enjoyable match.
So this week, Cena – as per, comes out and issues his ‘US title Open Challenge’, to our surprise none other than the NXT Champion Kevin Owens answers it.
Although the match didn’t happen, the segment basically proved that the ‘IWC’ is only a small percentage of WWE’s audience, as there was a slight, but loud enough to hear “Fight! Owens! Fight!” chant struggling to build momentum in the corner of the crowd.
John Cena was correct in saying no one really knew who he was, to which Owens gave a fantastic response regarding how he doesn’t need Cena’s “veteran” advice because he’s been in the business just as long as Cena – this not only shown a total lack of respect to the former 15 time WWE Champion, but this did nothing but compliment Owens arrogant attitude – which, for nostalgic purposes, reminded me of a young Steve Austin.
Suddenly! Owens straight out hits John Cena with a gorgeous pop-up power bomb –
The representative of NXT just destroyed the face of Monday Night Raw – surely this will draw more of Raw’s audience to the NXT product -- the average viewer should now be willing to invest their time into Kevin Owens -- which in turn puts more eyes on NXT.
Triumphantly standing across a battered John Cena, the NXT champion raises his title. I think it's safe to say that the era of the ‘Indies’ has begun.
