We are fresh off the WWE Network Exclusive event ‘Elimination Chamber’.
Now I really don’t want to get into how lacklustre this entire event was, from the shockingly awful Tag Team ‘Chamber match, the half American – Half Russian – Half Jamaican? Accent of Lana, what looked like Paige’s new boob job -- all the way through to the main event in which the “Crazy” Dean Ambrose stole the WWE championship title from Seth Rollins -- something only a crazy person would do, right? Seriously creative need to stop getting their ideas for this guy from old reruns of Dick Dastardly and Mutley.
Ok so, I will happily admit that I am a fan of Kevin Steen, I have been a big fan of his work since his early Ring of Honor days -- when RoH actually had a personality, and I still am a huge fan of this guy!
But! -- As much as I enjoyed the bout between Owens and Cena, and without trying to take anything away from the quality of the wrestling in this particular match, I do have to beg the question -- Who in the blue hell booked this garbage?
If this match was in Ring of Honor then I would understand! But it isn’t! It is a WWE match, and although everybody like thinks that one of those W’s in WWE still means wrestling I’m afraid it doesn’t! The only letter in this brand that means anything is the E – for Entertainment!
WWE is a TELEVISION SHOW! – I cannot stress this enough!
Yes it was a great match, but why was it a straight up wrestling match!? This makes no sense to me? Yeah there were a few hard hitting spots, but for the most part it was a bog standard wrestling match.
Monday Night Raw is a television show, much like Game of Thrones! I have followed the story between Kevin Owens and John Cena because they built it like these two were about to fight! and what happens!? They wrestle..?
Please, somebody explain this one to me? Where is the logic here?
The second John Cena slid into the ring Kevin Owens should have been right on top of him, stopping his head into the canvas -- but what happens? He stands in the corner and allows Cena to do his usual shtick of taking his merch’ off and throwing it into the crowd! Doing his salute and then posing.
This goes against everything that not only this angle stood for, but also what the Kevin Owens character stands for! Do you think Owens would of given Sami Zayn time to wave to his fans -- Of course not! -- So why give John Cena that treatment? Especially when you consider that Cena is a far bigger threat to Owens than Zayn ever was.
There was, although short, a rivalry between these two characters that was built up -- Owens had destroyed Cena over a period of a few weeks, he was mocking him, he disrespected him -- Kevin Owens was there to make an example of John Cena, I mean they even rammed the footage of Owens power-bombing Sami Zayn onto the ring apron down our throats in the video packages, which suggests that that’s what was going to happen to John Cena, its this type of stuff that suggest the type of match they are going to have -- they worked this angle by suggesting that these two were going to destroy one another, which would make Kevin Owens look like a star, because each time he’s came out and destroyed John Cena on Raw, Cena has made Owens look phenomenal!
But apparently, for some reason both men decided that they don’t actually hate one another that much and thst they’ll just settle this like the professional gladiators that they are and have a good ol’ fashioned wrasslin’ match!
And yes, despite the fact it was a good solid wrestling match -- contrary to what you may have been reading on the Internet, it did not make Kevin Owens look like a star!
Yes Owens should have won the match -- for obvious reasons...
But, the pin-fall does not really mean anything! It’s the booking that does, and the booking in this match was dreadful simply because somebody decided that these two guys should go out there and have a wrestling match instead of something that resembled the John Cena - Brock Lesnar match from Extreme Rules 2012 -- which is the potential that this match had, it’s the potential that the storyline had.
D’you know what this tells me? It tells me that Kevin Owens is not the saving grace that all the smark’s are making him out to be! Because already it seems they have dropped the ball on him by not allowing him to be the ass kicker that he is. If they want him to be a success they need to capitalise on the legitimacy that Kevin Steen brings to the Kevin Owens character -- Please WWE let him be the ass kicker that we’ve all come to know and love!
As much as I love Kevin Steen’s work! I want to be proven wrong! I want to see Kevin Owens come out and completely own the ring and the mic -- but this can only be accomplished if they let him do it on his own. Unfortunately I’ve seen this happen too often with guys who have talent and potential to really excel on Raw but they don’t, not because they get buried, but because they simply just get forgotten about, and I don’t want Kevin Owens to be added to that long list that includes the likes of Dolph Ziggler, Damien Sandow, Zack Ryder and Bray Wyatt.
As much as I hate to say this, But Kevin Owens..
It looks like creative has nothing for you.
